Whitestone are a six-piece team from Worcester with an evangelistic heart and a wide range of musical influences spanning several decades. They perform some attractive inspirational soft pop on this their first recording. Three members (Michaela, East and Gill) share the writing of the eight songs on the 33-minute long disc - catchy, melodic and diverse tunes that well reveal their creative ability. The opening "Come To Praise Him" (repeated as a closing reprise) is a simple but delightful offering of adoration with gently guiding violin hues. Varied lead guitar sounds (c/o Steve East) make a welcome ingredient to nearly all tracks - thoroughly skilful stuff. Lydia Boyd is the able lead vocalist on all but one song - that the moody, vibey "David's Song". A problem with a couple of tracks near the start of the album is a disappointing lack of vocal clarity - this rather muffled sound becomes somewhat contorted on the otherwise charming "Psalm 40". This is surprising given the mixing and mastering skills of veteran Christian producer Colin Owen. Standout track has got to be the dreamy "Thank You", a groovy slice of praise, given a wonderful jazz vibe care of May Caulkin's angelic saxophone. Thankfully, they hang on to the groove and allow it to continue a full six minutes plus. Having received positive feedback from believers and non-believers alike, the future looks bright for this dedicated and clearly talented team.
