I'm sorry to announce that my old friend Sullivan Pugh died on December 30, at the age of 85. Even after the death of his first wife Iola ("Sister") Pugh, he kept touring under the name The Consolers (I guess her spiritual presence made the unit a duo!) They were the last "down-home" super-stars. Unlike the Staple Singers or even the down-homey Bill Moss and the Celestials, they never toured Europe. In 1972, I produced a gospel concert for the Newport Jazz Festival, and made sure to include them. That may have been their only "worldly" appearance. But they were great in church, particularly Sister Pugh, who could just sweep through a congregation. Their earliest records on DeLuxe are the most folkloric, particularly "Wade in the Water." Worth getting are any of their first ten singles for Nashboro, not to mention their greatest hit, "Waiting for My Child."

Did The Consolers sing the song "If Jesus Goes With Me I'LL Go"? If they did can some one send me the words and tell me how can I get a copy of the CD.

I read about the Consolers while reading Tony Heilbuts book "The Gospel Sound". Living in New Zealand, I had never heard of them before. the reviews I read on their music sounded extremely positive, and the people who remembered them had such warm things to say.
I decided to buy one of their CD's and I bought "Lord Bring me Down." I am so glad I did as every single song on it is wonderful. I love their sincere words and singing that I want to buy another Cd only there dosn't semm to be much about which is a great pity. Loved reading all of your comments.

The music of the Consolers have always been special to me. I am from a small Florida community and it was such a joy when they would come to town. The churches would be packed and the programs were enjoyed by all. We did not buy tickets; the only money collected was a free-will offering. They truly were a remarkable couple.

You can find lots of old 33's and new CDs on ebay. Keep watching and most anything can turn up. I've found, with patience, what I was looking for. Type in The Consolers in the search bar. Good Luck

I am Sullivan Pugh's granddaughter. It filled my heart to know that The Consolers touched your life. Currently, he is on Hospice Care at his home in Miami, Florida. Please pray for him.
