Tony Cummings spoke to the multi-talented DEREK MINOR about his music
Continued from page 1
Derek: I wrote that song when I was coming out of kind of a down season and I wrote it as an anthem for myself, to say we're on to bigger, better things. Sometimes you can get so caught up in what has happened in the past that you don't realise that there are better things ahead of you.
Tony: Isn't there a danger with artists that they are very driven? They feel up if their last album was a hit but they get easily depressed if it didn't sell as well as the previous one. Would you call yourself a driven man?
Derek: Oh, absolutely driven but what I've learned as far as the numbers are concerned that doesn't always reflect the art. Some albums may not sell as well as others and some sell an awesome amount of records but it doesn't mean that they're great. I just try to make the best music I can make and do the best I can with the marketing and the rest is up to the market place to determine whether they want to buy it or not.
Tony: How is your relationship with Lecrae currently?
Derek: It's excellent. Lecrae is someone that really discipled me as I grew up. We went through a season where we had a falling out over some things but you don't really have a brother if you don't argue and fight. That's how our relationship has been. But everything at this moment is excellent. I wish him all the success. I know he's ramping up to drop his album.
Tony: When you pulled away from Reach Records that must have been a very difficult time for you. Did you find it emotionally draining?
Derek: Yes, it was definitely emotionally draining because it was
new. But any venture, anything that's new is going to be draining,
that's just the way it is. Praise the Lord I've always had the support
of my friends and family and from a lot of Reach Records artists so
it's been a beautiful journey.
