Singer/songwriter Barry Reeves is a Methodist local preacher working in the Harrow circuit. In his letter accompanying this CD he explained the thinking behind this album: "My songs are not worship songs, they are written for the many who are Christians of a liberal persuasion who are ignored by worship songwriters today." There are indeed a wide range of themes examined here - thanking God for the everyday things ("Lord Jesus Protect Us"), a man broken by the ravages of war ("Remembrance Sunday") and even a modern Christmas carol. Strengths are Barry's telling way with a lyric, for instance his withering denouncement of an arms trader ("It is not me that pulls the trigger/My conscience is clear and my pocket is bigger"). The weakness is that these simple recordings, mostly featuring solely Barry's gentle acoustic guitar, show up the deficiencies of the songwriter's voice. If you can ignore the weak vocals you might want to investigate a gifted folky songwriter. But I suspect others will be put off.

The CD contains one of the best anti-war songs (Arms Fair) I have heard in many a year. This track alone sets a standard that is hard to match. Good to hear a Christian singer songwriter with his feet in real life. Pax

Obviously the "genius" of Barry Reeves has completely by-passed cross-rhythms

Barry's fine and versatile tenor voice is a pleasure to hear, the perfect vehicle for songs which are stirring, sensitive, satirical or poignant. For a 20 year friend usually averse to christian music Barry's voice was the initial attraction, then she was impressed by the intellectual and emotional power of his work. From personal to political, here are songs which feel like classics, lingering in the mind, challenging the listener or freeing their emotion.Cryptic or lyrically direct, these songs deserve repeated listening.Don't miss out!

No doubt some will like this CD more than others. Maybe studio treatment would make a stronger statement. But all the same, a big chunk of our faith is that a gentle voice can be more devastating than the earthquake, wind and fire. I can well imagine Barry moving a chapel congregation more deeply than any rally in Hyde Park. Shalom.

I cannot agree with most of the review as printed. I understand Barry wote and produced this CD by himself as well as writing all the songs. This in itself is a remarkable achievement. The songs are clever, thought provoking and well performed. Any defects in sound quality are easily explained by the lack of proffesional facilities used in its making and if encouraged I think Barry could improve on this latter side. A definate 8 out of 10.

Barry writes songs relevent to current afairs and pinpoints failures in society; these are not purely for worship but rather pertinent comments. I have been in the congregation and have no problem hearing him. My only problem with the CD was that with one exception all the songs sounded similar. I felt there should be more variation in style. I know it was made for a much wider audience, and to provoke responses to the issues. I believe he must vary the format to attract them.. I felt the songs were well written, and well sung, succeeding in provoking discussions.

What a distorted review! I have heard Barry play and enjoyed one of his services. His songs are a welcome change form cliche filled worship songs which drove me from churches for 15 years. You say that he has a weak voice, but on my copy of the CD the voice is full and clear and easy to hear above his guitar playing, which is not always gentle, as you say it is.

I think you don't like his liberal ideas, which I do, and have denigrated his work because of this.
