Stepping into the fine tradition of rappers encouraging good spelling the Florida-based Children Unda Da Son present their debut EP. While the spoken intro is no less tedious than near identical interludes on thousands of other hip-hop albums the EP is pretty impressive. It has a smack of the '90s to it - the beats have a bit of a gangsta feel while the lyrics are clever, at times hilarious. "Pro Active" is a personal highlight with a great message about having substance as a Christian and apart from the last track "Salvation" which drags on a bit 'Born Again Christian' is an enjoyable listen. This release isn't really groundbreaking, it certainly doesn't depart from typical conventions and traditions within hip-hop, but this isn't that noticeable since hip-hop itself is fairly slow moving when it comes to innovation. That said Children Unda Da Son have done well to produce an EP that sounds at least as good as the hip-hop we're used to and could easily give the mainstream a run for its money. So overall it's a promising first release from Children Unda Da Son and while they continue to promote sun-screen to youngsters I hope to hear a full length release from them before too long.
