For a long time I have considered that the phrase "Christian comedy" is in fact an oxymoron. It's not that God doesn't like laughter, it's simply that when Christians come to try and tickle your funny bones, there are many occasions when it falls flat. Mark Lowry's Mouth In Motion only raised a few titters but not much more, so it was with trepidation that I approached this album. Having said that, Chonda Pierce's kooky brand of stream of consciousness storytelling and self-deprecating humour raises quite a few laughs in the Rimmer office where I write this! A Girl's Night Out was recorded in front of a huge church audience of women enjoying empathy with a comedienne who's not afraid to draw on the real tragedy of her own experiences and bring out the humour. Her descriptions of her family and in particular her remarkable mother are both hilarious and moving. She's the queen of the pithy one-line put-downs and to a partisan audience of women looking for a hysterical time. Ok so it doesn't travel across the ocean too well so some of the cultural references don't translate so well and Chonda's downhome drawl takes a little getting used to. Not convinced about the songs she chooses to sing though! Still, can't have everything! Good for a chuckle.

Mike,
Thank you for your comments. I LOVE the honesty - and yeah, I didn't like the songs so much either! HA! I suggest you start using the word, "Ya'll" -- It'll grow on you!

Laugh!
