Opening with a classic brash and raw offering, Californian punk rockers Cross-Check kick off their debut release with more than a nod to an ice hockey theme. This is high energy hardcore punk out of Los Angeles. The majority of the 13 tracks sit solidly over a dynamic, driving and belligerent bass line whilst Chad Sengstock delivers a barrage of forceful lyrics. "Rattle And Roll" is a particularly good example of the rumbling bass/vocal trade off, whilst "Courage" has a well-crafted guitar lead that rests on the edge of feedback throughout. There are more reflective moments littered throughout the recording, including the melodic section of "Open" and the fully instrumental piece, "Interlude". This five-piece, however, never stray too far from their home territory of buzzsaw guitars and gang vocals. Fans of Flatfoot 56 will be pleased to hear Brandon Good delivering the vocals for "Fueling Anger, Fighting Logic", but will not recognize the more abrasive tone of this album. Fans of traditional punk rock music will love its authentic spit and sawdust feel along with the aggressive and challenging delivery of some tongue in cheek reflections on the state of modern Christianity. At around 40 minutes in length this is verging on epic for hardcore music and is certainly good value.
