A critic once said that "Christian music is too bland" and that "the lyrics sound like they have been written by a 15 year old". While disagreeing with this statement I find myself needing proof. Darrell Evans' new album serves as my proof. Darrell, who in the '90s wrote the classic "Let The River Flow", is today a worship artist based in Olympia, Washington and is a perfect example of the talent and faith Christian music exhibits. Darrell matches his distinctive, low and gentle voice with a careful accompaniment of acoustic and electric guitars. His voice acts as word painting to the lyrics, smoothly matching passion with meaning. The album begins with an update of "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", a lively track and a perfect start to the project. Throughout the album the repetition applied to restate the powerful phrases does become a tad tiresome, but this is a common fault with most congregational worship. Evans' use of texture and dynamics create not just an opportunity to be entertained but create a peaceful and an animated atmosphere, perfect for worship.
