Every now and then a CD comes along which reminds you that the world is getting smaller. Darrell Six is based in Colorado, from where his CreateWorship.org company creates music aimed at ministering to Chinese people. In keeping with his vision "to take the Gospel to Chinese young people through music and create worship where none exists", Darrell has recorded a set of beautiful sounding, well crafted worship songs sung in Mandarin Chinese. Musically, I guess a purist would say this sounded more Western than Chinese, but Darrell clearly knows his target audience well; a lot of young Chinese people do have Western tastes in music! One of the many all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet restaurants near my home always has videos of Chinese pop music on its plasma screens, and the songs on this CD could easily sit alongside any of those tunes. I particularly liked "Yong Yuan Jing Bai Ni" (I Will Worship You Forever) with its lovely acoustic guitar, and "Ye Su Quing Lai" (Jesus, Please Come). Having said that, I hae to point out that "Yi Qie Mei Shan" (Everything Good) sounds spookily like Matt Redman's "Blessed Be Your Name". Darrell hopes to have some more traditional-sounding Chinese music out in about a year's time. I can hardly wait.
