Those of you who know your Southern soul music will know that this mighty voiced sister was one of the giants of the genre. So now that mainstream styles have moved on and Denise is no longer an R&B chartmaker, it's heartening to see Denise return to her roots with an unadulterated gospel set. Wisely, she's assembled a set of Memphis musos to give her the cookin' sound of old and whether she's singing a gospelisation of the old Spinners hit "Mighty Love" or doing a deep soul recitation on "Still Talking' 'Bout A Man", the effect is sublime. There are one or two snags, the title track rather rips off "Knock On Wood" while the melody of "God Is Absolutely Mad About You" is corny enough to fit on a Cedarmont Kids album. But soul connoisseurs will want this for it's timeless hot tracks.
