Previously the lead singer of pop/rock band Felt who aren't known internationally but were BIG in New Zealand, 'Symmetry' sees Edwin Derricutt going it alone, with an acoustic album that owes a debt to the chilled-out vibes of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. Fortunately this doesn't feel forced, and the result is a great set of heartfelt and catchy songs that admirably walks the line between worship and pop. The title track is a light and light-hearted song about a romantic relationship, and it's balanced by more spiritually searching songs like "Waihi" and "Write Your Name". The latter also exemplifies Derricutt's great lyrics, with the line "Be the carpet in my lounge room/Be the shine on my floor" bringing a sense of the everyday nature of a relationship with God. The other ace in Derricutt's hand is his soulful and expressive voice, reminiscent of Del Amitri's Justin Currie, with a similar ability to capture emotion in his tones. Perfect for a laid-back evening with a contemplative edge, 'Symmetry' is highly recommended.
