This is the second CD from London-based Elan (now two members, Jo Hill and Emma Thirwell) - the first a four track sampler (‘Facts, Pics & Trivia’) released in 2000. This is a much larger offering of 11 tracks including one live cut. The music is refreshingly uncluttered with lyrics reflecting subjects as diverse as trade justice and personal relationships. Repeated listening is rewarded with tunes that refuse to go away, and you will find yourself humming them when you least expect it, growing on you over time. Influences quoted on the record company's website (which needs updating!), are evident here such as Joni Mitchell and the Indigo Girls. For me the track “Beautiful” is outstanding with its combination of lyrical beauty and superb piano backing. For thoughtful lyrics and musical enjoyment, it does not get much better.
