A CD covering the 10 years or so that this American super trio has been topping the USA gospel charts. And rightly so. The often-voiced maxim that Christian music should at least be as good as that of the world is beautifully realised in Marty McCall, Bonnie Keen and Melodie Tunney. There really is excellence written right the way through this exciting collection of pop, rock, soul and (almost) R&B. There may be not too much in the way of innovation, but the sheer quality more than compensates for what has become a stereotyped cleanliness in the production moulds of Abba, Michael Jackson and many others. The album is eclectic, however. Fifth track in is "O Sifuni Mungu" and this African style acappella version of "All Creatures Of Our God And King" is outstanding in every way. Powerful, clear vocals and feel and intonation worthy of taking the risk by caucasion brother and sisters. Then immediately following, the big band blast "Something Takes Over", the eponymous title of the 1987 album from which both these tracks come. For those into First Call in a big way, you may well want to get this nostalgia trip. For those who don't know them too well, you'll be amazed at the profuse versatility of styles and skills which always seek to bring glory to Jesus Christ. "Undivided" is that kind of slow, worshipful ballad which can't possibly fail to stir the heart to Christian unity and should be an anthem to the Church at this time. There are no weak songs and the album should be played through speakers designed for serious sound.
