Over its 23-year history, the Gaither Vocal Band has included some of the big names in gospel performing a unique blend of Southern gospel, country and adult contemporary. Some of the names you'll be familiar with - Bill Gaither (of course!), Russ Taff, Steve Green and Michael English to name but a few of those who've passed through the ranks. Bill Gaither apparently selected songs from 18 albums for this compilation and so there appears to be a rich seam to mine! This two CD set includes 37 songs, four of which are new releases recorded by the current members of the Vocal Band. Aside from the occasional slide in patriotic flag-waving ("The Star-Spangled Banner") and a tendency to rely on story songs ("The Baptism of Jesse Taylor") the words are great. I have to say that the four-part harmonies are so smooth as to make me want to reach for one of Elvis's gospel albums - but clearly a lot of people Stateside enjoy and are blessed by this style.
