It no doubt sounded like a good idea - bring together churches from all over the Midlands - Anglicans, Baptists, Methodists, Black Pentecostals - and make an album that celebrates "the creativity of congregational worship within local churches." But the listening is far from good. The material from a variety of composers is often stilted and stiflingly unoriginal while the performances are stiff and utterly devoid of passion. Despite the words of praise from the assistant bishop of Birmingham in the blurb, this is religious music which seems to have cast off the powerful inheritance of hymnody but has found only banality to replace it.
