Gotee Records have had us waiting a tad too long for the debut of these Californian brothers. But it's well worth the wait for Grits bring a refreshing slice of laid-back jazz to the sound of hip hop. Some of the cuts here almost recall the beret-and-beard bebop poets who used to emote cool wisdom over rhythm sections in cellar jazz clubs way back when. But it isn't reefer jibberish and jaded worldliness these guys are selling in their lugubrious raps. Though peppered with obscure (to me) street slang and passages of surreal total consciousness speel Grits point to the One who can "Set your mind at ease". A truly original band pushing back the hip hop boundaries.
