Gospel, R&B, urban, funk, pop...all on one album! Impossible? Nope, because Helen Baylor has managed it. Her latest album is a colourful collage of the best in music styles. And the girl can sing! She moves from the comfy, late night feel of "Live And Let Live", a soft ballad with a tough message, to the funky grooves of the title track. The soul diva surfaces for "Makin' It Plain" and Helen lets it rip, Motown style. We're in gospel territory with a reworking of that ole classic, "Amazing Grace", and a piano player that should be locked up for being too groovy! Enter sax, stage left. This is the best version I've heard in yonks. It kept me pinned down, listening, helpless. Helen moves as effortlessly as a penguin on ice skates through each toe-tapping tune and doesn't even wobble once. As well as That Voice, Helen showcases a depth and a musical diversity so often lacking in her contemporaries. Impressive, as it's her first studio album in three years and it's worth the wait. Hours of unsolicited musical manna for the soul.
