In a 1993 interview recorded in the annals of this hallowed journal, Kevin Prosch stated that God was calling him to minister in the secular music field. This choice album with band (previously Union) represents his first mainstream project this side of the Atlantic. The band's new identity does not herald a vast change in musical direction, however. The sound remains raw, recalling an earlier era in rock music with basic ingredients: guitars, percussion and hammond organ seasoned with piano, strings and accordion. Mr Prosch's soulful voice ladles on the emotional depth captured in passionate lyrics, effectively relaying spiritual truth to the listener in songs constructed on repetitive and rhythmic simple chordal patterns. The album opens with a desolate cry echoed by acoustic guitar and ends with the band letting rip in a foot-stomping hoe-down thang (yeeha!). In between a superbly diverse blend of songs deal with love, death, loneliness, despair and hope. While there is little explicit expression of faith, the album still doesn't disappoint on a spiritual level. The erstwhile worship leader's offering is profoundly moving and reaches a high on the track "Love Is All You Need" when Kevin starts singing in tongues during the last chorus. As he does so the listener is left in no doubt as to the kind of love he is talking about. This is an excellent album full of powerful songs directly aimed at the unchurched - let's pray that it reaches its intended target.
