The first volume of what may turn out to be a long running series was a various artists thing, featuring Joanne Hogg, Robin Mark, Brian Houston and Andy Rogers, only the last-named of which might be described as a "new" Celt. For Volume 2, the 13 tracks on offer are nearly all the songwriting work of Cork City colleen Liz Fitzgibbon, whose independent CD 'Exposed' I reviewed and enjoyed in CR57, and Ian Hannah, definitely a new Celt to this reviewer. Kingsway have also wheeled out some big names to ensure the album doesn't lack quality; Sarah Lacy and Simon Goodall are on backing vocals, supporting Liz's clean and clear lead voice, Richard Lacy brings his whistles and bodhran, fellow Eden's Bridger David Bird his guitars, and Mick Doonan his uillean pipes; Chris Norton makes all the right noises on piano, Nick Haigh of the Northumbria Community adds some of his trademark fiddle, Phil Crabbe's on the drum kit, Phil Barker's on bass and Richard and Chris do their usual excellent production job behind the desk. The overall mood of the album is rather more reflective and thoughtful than Volume 1: 'You Are Worthy', for example, is a beautifully simple song, with just a piano backing, and Liz and Sarah weaving some magic harmonies. But if you want something more obviously Celtic, "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" has all the bells and whistles (and pipes and drums) that you'd expect. Lots to enjoy.
