In the beginning Lone Justice emerged in the American mainstream as a country-influenced new wave bad, not quite cow-punk but there are moments when they were close. Built around the startling live performances and stunning vocal talents of a teenage Maria McKee, 1986's 'Shelter' was their second release and from the rocking opening cut "I Found Love", this is a passionate, no holds barred album with production from Jimmy Lovine and Little Steven which is very much of its time. The mixture of raw country sounds and McKee's powerful voice still makes an impact 20 years on. On a song like "Inspiration" or "Shelter", she may wail like a banshee but the sound penetrates the soul. When she pulls back, as on "Dreams Come True" or "The Gift", it's equally compelling. "Belfry" has a huge '80s production with thumping drums and McKee's voice front and centre. For all that this is a band effort, Maria stands front and centre and whilst her solo career has rarely had the coverage and the critical excitement of this era of her life, there's still much to celebrate with this seminal release.
