Scotland's Luma announce themselves on their latest EP with a sunny Britpop track that winks and nods at Snow Patrol's early years, with the chorus breaking out into heartfelt indie rock. Lead singer Del Mcalpine has a crisp and clear voice as he intones the tale of a broken relationship with the most sensitive and bright vocals on this EP title track. "Behind Closed Doors" introduces the string section accompanying the five-piece and exhibits a more mellow side, with shades of U2 and an attempt at scenic accompaniments reminiscent of Longview. But the chorus doesn't arrive, and neither does the song entirely. Better is "13", which brims with hope, and occasional backing vocals adding depth as the band builds up to a crescendo. It's charming, a little eccentric and equally confessional. For me, the EP closer "I Know We Will" seems to display the opposing forces at play for the band. The song is largely forgettable yet the thoughtful arrangement in the refrain "If you're going out there, I'm coming with you" is memorable. A joyful string section compliments Killers-esque guitars and it is this kind of awkward combination that if refined, might just mark Luma out as truly original.
