Catholic singer/songwriter and father of five Mark Mallet hails from Alberta,
Canada and this is his second recording since leaving an award winning
career in television journalism. Not surprisingly, this excellent album is
brimful with touching stories of enduring love and the trials of parenthood.
Those anticipating a dose of incisive and poetic commentary in the vein of
fellow Canadian Bruce Cockburn or Mary Chapin Carpenter may well be
disappointed – John Denver with a bit of edge would be closer to the truth.
But to his great credit, along with local country star Jim Witter, Mallett
has excelled himself as a producer of a radio friendly New Country album
that still has room for a Celtic melody ("‘Kingdom Of Freedom"), a Jewish jig
("Makin’ My Way") and even a touch of bottleneck blues on the bayou in
"Mercy". If ever there was an album that grows on the listener with every
hearing then this is it.
