A sort of Celtic-tinged Marc Cohn perhaps, Matthew hails from deepest Spokane, Washington, which begs the question, "Can anything good come out of Spokane?". Well, yes actually. After a slightly weak start with the title track, things perk up considerably with the countrified pop of "Jesse" and the jazz-tinged "Sally Went Down". As Matthew himself says, this is a storytelling album and it's clear that it's been a real labour of love. What's also clear is that despite a few timing problems here and there, this is a most original and engaging project and well worth making the effort to get hold of. Goodness, he even LOOKS like Marc Cohn.
