Contrary to popular belief Maurette isn't actually one of the Clark Sisters, however she did win a Stellar Award for best new gospel artist in 1999. For her second album, 'By His Grace', she has teamed up with veteran gospel producers Kevin Bond and Steven Ford and as you'd imagine, the results are stunning. Gifted with a gorgeous voice and carefully choosing some fine songs, there is plenty to get excited about here. The soulfulness and passion of "Even In The Rain" and the upbeat fresh appreciation of "Since He Came" are both immediate winners. Maurette also is proving to be an excellent songwriter, either writing or co-writing half of the material here. I love the hope of the gentle ballad "One Prayer Away" and at the other extreme the electronic funk of the celebratory "You're My Everything". Then there's the lush ballad "You Saved My Life" and a new take on the old Winans tune "Restoration". An album of contrasts with the message to the fore, 'By His Grace', whilst not breaking new ground, is classic gospel, characterised by brilliant vocal performances and an uplifting vibe.
