Over the years this Midlands-based singer/songwriter has carved out a distinctive sound characterised by laid back, half spoken vocals over a fresh urban blues groove. With bass player Ross Lander and drummer Aron Bicskey and with Chris Smith helping out on keys, this latest offering brings out all the wit and individuality of Poulton's music. There are elements of this recording that sound as if they have rolled straight out of a smoky blues club, all laid down with a tight rhythm section. A fluid bassline and harmonica drive through "Bad Things People Do" and this is followed by "Crying Out Loud" with its catchy little guitar riff that shuffles along. These tracks are reminiscent of the late Larry Norman, both in musical style and lyrical sharpness. At times dryly witty, and at others acerbic as they comment on various aspects of life in the 21st century. One slight frustration I found with the recording however was the lack of variety and I suppose I should add that Paul's vocals will not be to everybody's taste. Having said that, a late highlight is another nod towards Larry Norman with the inclusion of an excellent reworking of his "Readers Digest". This is a well produced, blues-tinged album that will not disappoint Paul's many fans.
