Bath-based singer/songwriter Rachel Jane offers her EP debut through bright UK independent Orphan No More. The 19 year old singer shows a rich tapestry of influences on these four tracks. It is difficult to pin this record to one genre with equal measures of soul, gospel, R&B and pop interwoven through some skillful songwriting. Even within individual songs there is great variety in the instrumentation. Opener "Rise" starts with soft layered vocals building up with the addition of strings, guitars and a powerful drum beat with each section flowing seamlessly into the next. "Come Away" offers a change of pace with a piano-led power ballad really showing off Rachel's appealing vocals. The strength of the songwriting also shines through in the lyrics drawing on truths from the Bible to encourage, challenge and uplift not least on closing track "Freedom" ("I will break those chains that bind you/You will walk in freedom freely"). Rachel Jane is an exciting talent and I look forward to hearing more from her in the future.
