For many years now Ron Block has been an integral part of Alison Krauss's Union Station Band. A skilled banjo and guitarist, Ron has also been responsible for writing many fine spiritual-based pieces for the group. He first came to my attention on the 1994 album 'I Know Who Holds Tomorrow' by Alison Krauss And The Cox Family, which to this day remains my favourite gospel album. 'Far Away Land' dates from 2001 but has only now made it to the CR website. It's an omission that needed correcting as this is a stone classic and contains some of the most perceptive and deep meaning songs you are likely to hear. All the songs have comments from Ron on the album notes, indicating the spiritual journey he has been on for many years. The second track "He's Holding On To Me" is just so good I am amazed that other artists haven't grabbed it to record. Many members of Union Station appear as backing musicians and the whole album is just so good that I am worried that I will wear it out before too long! It was a delight to see him in person on the recent Alison Krauss tour where Alison finished with yet another Ron Block gospel special from her fine new album. For country gospel connoisseurs, this is as good as it gets.
