Bradford-based pianist and long-time Kendrick associate Steve Thompson leads a swinging Salvation Army Big Band though the greatest hits of the last 100 years of Christian songs. The album is released under the banner of the Salvation Army's Roots project and was recorded in Southport last year at an event which brought together a number of stalwarts of the UK Christian music scene. The playing and singing is okay and some of the arrangements breathe a bit of new life into hackneyed songs ("When The Saints ." for example). However, the most enjoyable bits for me were the all too brief instrumental passages, because the choice of material is so uninspiring . "O Happy Day", "Be Bold" and - oh my goodness - the truly dreadful "Give Me Oil In My Lamp". Even the Kendrick songs seem to date back to a bygone era. The only nod to 21st century writing comes with a medley of Hughes' "Beautiful One" and Tomlin's "Forever", which come as a truly blessed relief. Which all begs the question, why? I guess the Salvation Army link is part of the answer, but don't the Army - with the massive contribution that they have made to church music over the years - demand more of those who choose what they play and sing?

As someone who was at the recording of this CD, I can personally attest to how great this event was in the huge tent in southport where this event took place. It was a fantastic night and the atmosphere was incredible. That being said, John Hebdon does have a point about the selection of songs used in this recording. Minus track 6 (beautiful one/forever), which was actually recorded at a different point in the weekend, not in the main praise party, the most modern song done was send the fire, and to be honest i got a bit annoyed at the lack of 'modern' tunes, but i guess thats down to my age (i was 20 at the time). However, when I got the CD, it quickly grew on me, and the selection of songs didn't bother me anymore. If it had been up to me i would have injected a few more modern tunes in there to keep things fresh, but i cannot recommend this CD more. don't put the coice of 'traditional' tunes down to some sort of salvation army mentality, we're not as old-fashioned as you may think!!

God is timeless!

I take it you will be throwing out the hymns - some of them are getting on for 200!

I have no idea what John Hebdon is on about!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 'old songs'. that is exactly what is wrong with people today, 'throw out the old and give me the new'. What about people like me who enjoy hearing and singing Classics which is what this album brings, classic songs to life with the fun of big band style. I love it, and I have friends who love it. John, if you are going to review, remember it is only your opinion and the masses who buy these albums actually celebrate the someone is willing to bring back the classic's that so many out here enjoy. This Album is fun and great to sing along to. Go buy it and you will see. Well done Salvation Army!
