Under the leadership of staff bandmaster Dr Stephen Cobb, this album does exactly what it says on the tin. ISB's 'Heritage Series' has carefully selected highlights from the Salvation Army's repertoire since the 1930s, and here 'Volume 2' showcases the music that was being composed and performed throughout the dark days of World War 2 and its aftermath. It is music to inspire and sensitively uplift listeners still reeling from the tragedy of it all. The detailed sleevenotes confirm that many SA band leaders were also composers and arrangers, with the works of Bramwell Coles, Wilfred Heaton and Arthur Gullidge well represented. Authentic without sounding dated, 'Music From The 1940s' is a fine collection.
