There are a few distinctive touches on this set - a chorus sung in Spanish on “Addicted” or the raps by C Brown-The Lord’s Son on a couple of cuts – but mostly this is stylised urban gospel stuff let down by too many dull songs with lyrics found in the gospel singer’s book of clichés and grooves which are mildly funky without going anywhere new. New York-born, Georgia-based Tomell has a lithely sinuous vocal style but only the most undemanding R&B buffs will find much on ‘Soul Winner’ to warm their souls.
