Anyone who saw the brilliant Weapons Of Sound play live at Greenbelt this year will realise that they are an intensely visual experience. So you might wonder whether they would come across well in an 'ears only' setting, the answer is a resounding YES! For the uninitiated, WOS play junk funk. Their own brand of extremely danceable dance music played entirely on instruments which they have made themselves out of just about anything that is lying around. A glance at the 18 strong line up reveals exponents of such items as oil drums, plastic buckets, bat phones and shopping trolleys, as well as the obligatory kitchen sink. The end result is a 'hotch potch' of yells, whistles, 'whumps', and splats, combined with unstoppable energy and an obvious ear for a good tune. How do you get a tune out of a dustbin? Don't ask me, ask them, they do it very convincingly. With the dance scene becoming more and more reliant on computer technology it's great to see someone stripping away all the nonsense and getting back to their 'roots'. Truly tribal.
