My Choice: Life of Pi - Mychael Danna. A worthy win, all things considered.
Best Production Design:
Winner: Lincoln
My Choice: Life Of Pi or Skyfall. The whole film looked magnificent. Then again so did Skyfall. Decisions, decisions.
Best Animated Short:
Winner: Paperman
My Choice: Paperman. To be fair, I've not seen all of the others, but Paperman (the short before Wreck-It Ralph) was absolutely sublime.
Best Sound Editing:
Winner: Zero Dark Thirty & Skyfall
My Choice: The Dark Knight Rises (not nominated). The first of many criminal omissions in the technical categories for this film.
Best Sound Mixing:
Winner: Les Miserables
My Choice: The Dark Knight Rises (not nominated). See above really.
Best Visual Effects:
Winner: Life Of Pi
My Choice: The Dark Knight Rises (not nominated). I cannot recall such a horrifyingly blatant snubbing for a film that really, really deserved to be at the very least nominated in categories like this. I am still trying to figure out what on earth the Academy has against Christopher Nolan. Still, he's in good company (Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Peter Weir and so on).
Here-endeth the Oscars rant for 2013. ![]()
Simon Dillon was born the year Steven Spielberg made moviegoers terrified of sharks He loves books and films, writing the former and reviewing the latter. His novels include Peaceful Quiet Lives, Children of the Folded Valley, Spectre of Springwell Forest, and Uncle Flynn. Simon is a fully committed Christian, but doesn’t like to “identify” with any particular denomination. He doesn’t do hugs, and generally prefers moody, sombre Gregorian chants to bouncier Christian music (with a few exceptions). In his reviews, he isn’t interested in counting f-words and miniskirts, but he attempts to unpack the message of the film, with faith issues in mind.

Actually it should be the VFX houses that got the Oscar - Life of Pi wins, yet the VFX house that did all the work - Rhythm & Hues - went Bankrupt. They don't see anything of the massive profits :( This is wrong. https://www.facebook.com/VfxSolidarityIntl
