Bright Ones: Bethel Music's teenage worship team turned actors in a movie

Tuesday 14th May 2019

Tony Cummings spoke to Josie Buchanan, Peyton Allen and Chloe Vassallo of the Redding, California-based BRIGHT ONES

Continued from page 2

Chloe: "Yes. I've been dancing ever since I was three years old."

Tony: What are your hopes for the film? Do you want to see it on at every cinema in America?

Chloe: "I'd be happy with whatever audience it gets, because you never know who it's going to impact. Even if it might be a small theatre, you never know if that one person gets impacted and ends up changing direction."

Tony: Is there a danger that fans of Bright Ones will start to confuse the real story of the group with the one told in the film?

Peyton: "We actually kind of joked around about that. I hope not. We didn't mention that it's inspired by true events."

Josie: "I've had people asking me if it's a true story, and it is not."

Tony: Did you all have to audition for your parts?

Peyton: "I know some people did audition, but David Norona and Fred Vassallo had already cast us, because we all knew each other. The whole movie felt like a family, as opposed to a lot of Hollywood movies where you have to get cast and you don't know anybody. When we shot the movie, everybody already knew each other; we already were close."

Tony: Had all of you had acting experience before?

Josie: "I had done a couple of school musicals before but I only had minor parts in them, so it was super-new to me. I had a lot of fun with it."

Chloe: "My parents had a theatre company, so I grew up doing plays and musicals - ever since first grade."

Tony: Was it difficult, your dad being the director?

Chloe: "I wouldn't say that. Maybe sometimes, but not all the time."

Tony: Did you get a lot of, 'That scene's no good. Do it again.'?

Chloe: "I totally did. On set, I had to respect him as director. There's still the fatherly love thing, but it was like in a work environment, so I saw him as more of a director than a dad." CR
