This is the second album from the Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter and in spite of the cover's hint that it may be acoustic folk-oriented it is actually an electric and eclectic album. From the soul/gospel overtones of the first two tracks "Faithful" and "Beating Of My Heart" to the folk rock inspired "You Are God" it is quite an album of contrasts. It almost works, but as is the danger with such an eclectic set it does suffer from a lack of coherence, not helped by the inclusion of a number of rather sickly sweet ballads. My question is, what is the Brent Ellison sound? I am not sure the answer can be found here. That said, there is evidence of a real attempt to produce something that is inspired and original and this is apparent in flashes of excellent songwriting rather than being in evidence throughout the whole album. The superb title track, a touching, honest and reflective number, is a great example of Brent at his best and it would be great to have a whole album of this quality.
