This seven-piece outfit have turned in a pretty special debut album for Word Gospel combining tight vocal harmonies, imaginative arrangements, smooth production and R&B grooves. The opener "Onward Christian Soldiers" catches fire and sets the pace for the proceedings where New York urban gospel is the name of the game and it's excellently executed. Psalms 61 slows things down and you get the chance to hear just how well these guys can harmonise. My favourite has to be their adaptation of Thomas Whitfield's classic "Oh How I Love Jesus" which combines '90s rhythms with a touch of big band jazz - fun and amazing! A seriously cool track! Meanwhile, "He's Worthy" is an insistent funky little outing and "A Mighty Fortress" is a classy ballad. Much to enjoy here. There is no doubting CD Hawkins' talent and this is an excellent vibrant beginning!
