This Texan Chris Taylor mustn't be confused with the Florida-based worship leader of the same name. Musically they are chalk and cheese as this Chris Taylor seems determined to push the envelope. Back in the late '90s, he looked like he was going to break big but in recent years he's basked in willful obscurity as a local artist in San Antonio. Switching from Nashville state of the art studios to home recording is a bit of a move and over the years Taylor has specialised in creative low budget recordings that have put the spotlight on his powerful songwriting and distinctive vocals. He's made a name for himself creating "real" music and surrounding himself with local musicians who add to his vision. And this is what makes 'Twilight Sunrise' such a surprise. His latest album sees Taylor embracing new technology, loops, synths and all kinds of other technical jiggery-pokery. He maintains his brilliance as a lyricist as a quick perusal of the titles of the songs contained here shows: "Corner Of Nowhere", "What Happens To A Man When He Gets What He Wants" and "Peace And Love Get It While It's Hot". The music is as inventive as Taylor's songcraft and he seems to be enjoying stretching himself into new areas and you have to respect that. The results of extra noise, distorted vocals and a few bits of turntablism only add to the overall effect though you can't escape the restrictions of Taylor's no budget approach - this is a triumph of creativity over poverty. Although I long for someone to give Taylor a huge budget, some top studio sessioners, a decent studio and an orchestra to play with to see what he'd do with that, 'Twilight Sunrise' will do for now.
