Cynthia Wilson-Felder might be a new name, but the songs aren't -'New Songs Of Zion' are for the most part the 'Old Songs Of Zion'. What is new are the production values, bringing in plenty of R&B-tinged rhythms to dress these oldies for contemporary consumption, while maintaining a sensitive awareness of their historical and cultural origins. Vocally the album's hot too. Take the deep, rich contralto of Cynthia Wilson-Felder with enough upset-the-saints pyrotechnics to please the most emotional flock. Add the background vocals of 'One Accord, mix in a dash of funky guitar, keyboards and sax (Sam Levine) and for a cherry on the top just a dash of rap. The album is dedicated to the memory of musician and producer Moses Dillard, who died shortly after completing this project. It's a fine finale.
