As debut albums go, this eponymous first release from Los Angeles worship man David Daughtry is exemplary. Under the production auspices of Jason White and accompanied by an incredibly tight backing band plus an equally together gospel choir, the baby-faced singer is given ample room to showcase arguably one of the best gospel voices I've heard for many a day. Wisely mixing old style faster gospel with modern slower R&B sounds, the likes of the funk-tinged opener "My Weapon" and the energetic "God Is Great - Leap!" sit comfortably next to more soulful numbers like "You Kept Me" and a cover of the Winans' "How Can You Live Without Christ". Elsewhere, the likes of "Great & Mighty Is He" and "He Is Able" - covers of Todd Pettygrove and Chaz Shephard songs respectively - ensure that God gets the praise before Daughtry ends his impressive first outing with yet another faultless vocal performance in the stripped-back "When God Says No".
