A great idea, teaming up Canada's much loved worship leader and writer of such classics as "You Are Worthy Of My Praise", "Let Your Glory Fall", "Every Move I Make" with producer Jason Halbert. Jason is, of course, the ex-Sonicflood rocker who's done wonderful things with Matt Redman and Tim Hughes. Here the partnership offer new versions of David's best known songs (plus two bonus newies). Mr Ruis may well be a veteran but he's still one of the most spirit-lifting worship leaders in the world church and in many ways, along with Brian Doerksen, has moved into the dual position of contemporary worship's elder statesmen, now that the sadly-missed Kevin Prosch is no longer touring. Even if you have a pile of Ruis albums, these new versions are well worth investigating. Just listen to the way the singer/songwriter takes "Mercy Is Falling" (surely one of his most banal melodies) and extemporising spine-tingling phrases like "our heart and our flesh cry out" over a churning, undulating electric guitar and a female voice soundscape producing something new and fresh.
