The album opens up with an excellent track, "Masquerade". This song starts with a funky little tune on acoustic and electric guitars, but you know any second it's gonna' let rip. There's a lot of depth to 'If But For One': all the songs are well written and make good use of other instruments, especially the acoustic guitar and piano. The drums, bass and guitars have matured since the band's debut album, weaving together quite intricate counterpoint, rhythms and harmonies without losing any of the 'solid' thrash feel. The mix is also really good, the drums aren't overpowering and the vocals come across clearly. The lyrics, though always hard-hitting, can be subtle and at times quite beautiful, as on "As It Rains". There is no doubt where their inspiration comes from. With 'If But For One' Detritus are continuing the tradition of excellent thrash and metal in this country. Get hold of this album, it's a good one!

This album still ranks as one of my most favorite albums of all time!

It was amazing the first time I listened to it when I bought it in '93, and it's amazing when I listen to it now, almost 14 years later!!

And no, I'm not willing to part with my copy of this CD ;)

Trying to get hold of the 'If But for One' album by 'Detritus' white metal band is so hard, ive searched seemingly all over the internet and all over localy to no avail. Ive been lucky to have the 'Perpetual Defiance' album which was given to me by a old old friend, to which ive been a fan of the music ever since. Getting hold of the only other album i so far believe that they've done in existence is rather difficult, so a little request, if anyone out there in internet land has a copy there willing to part with please let me know. I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you before hand. God bless.

This is the best Detritus album ever! Sailors Farewell is the best.... will you be on the last ship home?

Absolutely amazingly awesome album. One of the first albums to mix Heavy Metal and other genres. The classical piano on the title track is worthy of a concert pianist, and it's perfect mixing with the brooding power chords is something you will want to listen to over and over.
