With two of my musical heroes/heroines — one from the 60s, one the 80s — this album promised much. It didn't disappoint. My 60's heroine was Fontella Bass when I was a mod, I used to bop around to her "Rescue Me" classic. My 80s hero was David Peaston. I was once stopped dead in my tracks inside a record shop by 12 bars of his gasp-inducing voice, for my money the soulfulist voice in contemporary soul which could blow Luther Vandross and Alexander O'Neal off any stage. The fact its possessor is apparently a Christian is a blessing. His renditions here of "He'll Be Coming Back" and "The Voice Of The Lord" are awesome, David's high tenor going through octaves like a knife through butter. Fontella too sings the gospel slowies with real soul passion. Only Martha Bass (Fontella's mum) is well past her prime but with two such superlative voices, elsewhere on offer, and adequate contemporary arrangements in the backing tracks, this is an album I'll keep playing.
