Franz Schubert (1798-1828) lived fast and died young but still managed to leave a magnificent body of work. He is best remembered for his songs but he could and did also write choral music. The "Mass In E Flat Major" (D 950) was written in 1828 when the composer must have known he was dying and so it is possible to speculate that this piece was intended as some sort of memorial by and for himself. Experts note the slight but significant changes to the Latin text and draw all manner of conclusions but, for most of us, what we are interested in is the music. The easiest and best comparison would be with the famous Requiem of Schubert's fellow Austrian Mozart. Schubert gives the trombones an unusually prominent part and the work becomes increasingly powerful and disquieting although the composer's natural lyricism never fails. The Immortal Bach Ensemble seems a little hesitant at first but soon seem to get a grip and give us a splendid performance. My only gripe is that, even with a "Stabat Mater In G Minor" (D 175) included the CD lasts a mere 51 minutes. As ever the Naxos super-budget price is fair but surely something could have been found to take us up to the hour?
