If you're a fan of gospel who enjoys music as a means of praise and worship, you are likely to love this collaboration between singer/songwriter Simpson and the energetic choir hailing from Columbus, Ohio. It's a tightly produced and perfectly arranged album, packed full of up-tempo praise tracks as well as some superlative ballads. Part of the appeal lies in the mix of traditional gospel and more modern soulful sounds; the organ is particularly effective on "I Am God" and "Hide In Me" while Simpson's distinctive vocals enhance, rather than take over, the lead vocal work. If there is a cautionary note with this album, it's one that applies to a good number of gospel tracks, and perhaps to the genre as a whole. There is occasionally a temptation to focus on the here and now over and above the heavenly, eternal life and blessing that Jesus promised to every believer. Gospel can be an incredibly powerful tool for praise and worship, and as such, this is a fine example. It just might be useful to remember that the power to save souls lies with God's word, and not gospel music per se.
