First released 40 years ago. Before I listened I thought, why? What is the point releasing something from the '60s in 2004? Readers of the Cross Rhythms magazine may not have heard of Jackie Edwards, but he was a Jamaican recording star in his day and is best remembered by pop historians as the composer of the Spencer Davis Group's "Keep On Running". This gospel album is a fascinating piece of musical history. It's produced by the legendary Chris Blackwell of Island Records fame. Jackie Edwards has a silky smooth voice; he was known as the Nat King Cole of Jamaica, and comparing him to Nat King Cole is no exaggeration. This album comprises of 19 traditional songs and hymns, and a song written by Jackie called "Down On My Knees". Jackie died in August 1992 but his music and songs live on. There is a resurgence of '60s music at the moment. 'Stand Up For Jesus' will stand up to any album from that era. You may not like it but your mother would love it. So get her a copy.
