As a 67 year old veteran who has released his first project for 20 years one could hardly have anticipated the surge of energy evident when one plays this powerful album. The veteran can still engage in old school testifying with all the leather-lunged power of the gospel greats. Listening to "Searching", a standout gospel funk cut, you could be forgiven for thinking Jasper's age is closer to 20 than 70. With a voice that mixes the screeching soul power of James Brown with the smooth richness of Luther Vandross, our man launches into the title track, which neatly demonstrates his gospel pedigree, and how much experience Jasper has built up: it sounds both contemporary, but also drenched in old-school gospel swing. Some may not enjoy Jasper's occasional bursts into preaching but no one can doubt the full on vigour he brings to the old time gospel. The inclusion of a live DVD covering the same material on the CD is a great touch too. Proof that the old-school can still bring it to the table, 'Landmark' is an absolutely standout release.
