In many people's estimation, Jim and Jesse McReynolds are one of the all time great bluegrass groups. Not quite the high lonesome sound of Bill Monroe or the Stanley Brothers, but Jesse's brilliant mandolin playing has been an inspiration to many. They began their long career in country music by recording a gospel album, and these fine, God-fearing Christian gentlemen are still regularly recording gospel material. Here on this 5 CD box set we get all the sides Jim And Jesse recorded for Columbia and Epic during the 60s. Starting out with one of the best ever bluegrass bands, by the later 60s, with the folk boom long since gone, commercial interests dictated that they record country material. It is rather sad to hear some of the electrification the duo had to endure just to stay on the label. Great to get some of their classic albums on CD, including their two fine gospel albums The Old Country Church' and 'Sing Unto Him A New Song'. Add in some great unissued tracks and this is in my opinion one of the very best re-issues from Bear Family. Highly recommended.
