Founded in 1944, the Angelic Gospel Singers are the longest lived and biggest selling female group in the history of gospel music, and down the years they've worked with such names as Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Swanee Quintet, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and The Sensational Nightingales. They started their recording career in 1947 on Gotham Records, moved to the Nashboro label in 1955, and in 1983 switched to Malaco, and whilst the march of time has sapped their vocal power somewhat, the passion and guts that characterised the Golden Age of US gospel is still there, and the Angelics' founder Margaret Allison's lead vocals demonstrate that she still has the chops to deliver the goods. Old-time gospel fans can buy with confidence.
