Moon Junior is the stage name for London-based singer/songwriter Tristan C Anderson and his debut release is completely self-penned, with all featured instruments played by the man himself. His style is in the contemplative acoustic rock vein and his voice his reminiscent of the late Marc Bolan with a touch of Nick Drake thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, the proceedings get off to a weak start in the opener "People Verses" which is let down by a poor mix and a vocal performance that lacks the confidence to carry off what could potentially be a rousing and crowd pleasing anthem. In fact, most of the album is dogged by a two-dimensional mix which gives the impression that it could as well have been recorded in his bedroom as the Digital Docklands Studios in London. The vocals tend to sound better when double-tracked but Anderson could do with working on his vocal delivery to ensure his songs have maximum impact. Songs like "Reflections" and "Empty Hands" do come across really well and show the potential that is more than evident here. Generally though, the meaning behind some of his lyrics is not clear and his songwriting needs to be refined to improve the quality of his output. And whilst his reflective lyricism is intriguing, the album's content and inlay card (with perhaps the exception of "Prayers") do not necessarily direct the listener towards Anderson's faith. At times an enjoyable listen and certainly a talent in the making.
