This privately produced, six-track cassette by My Favourite Place -Andy Gale on guitars and Steve Dunn supplying lyrics and vocals - is of sound recording quality and deserves, as a first point of comment, a congratulatory slap on ihe back: the time and dedication involved in bringing off creative self-production is regularly underestimated by those who've never done it. The material, original save for the words of Psalm One. is in an acoustic rock/folk vein and employs that luscious, fully resonating 12 string sound and agreeable melodies, nicely complemented with gentle bass touches. Steve's voice has a tentative, hushed quality, a vulnerability not unsuited to the confessional nature of his personal-struggles-of-following-Jesus subject matter. A little more lyrical adventurousness might push theni forward artistically, or certainly beyond the confines of this laudable but over worked thematic favourite. A ballad, further poetic imagery, or a fresh theme would enhance the material in their chosen genre. Why not mock an idol, celebrate the wonder of creation or protest against an injustice lads? As it stands though, very pleasant.
