In 1992, the British Christian hard music scene, still very much in its infancy, was dealt a heavy blow when its two biggest names (Seventh Angel and Detritus) broke up. From those embers many have been kept up to date with the success and progression of Fire Fly. Yet the developments of former lead singer Ian Arkley seems to have been a little less well known, which is bizarre when you think of his achievements with Ashen Mortality, Century Sleeper, The Other Window, Paramaecium and now My Silent Wake. It's an impressive track record that seems to get more coverage overseas than it does here in the UK. My Silent Wake carry on from Ashen Mortality's pedigree of gothic doom, but also maintaining some of those thrash influences from back in the day (best demonstrated on my favourite track "Burning"). It's a haunting and dark album that seems to follow a wider breadth of musicianship than previous releases. Whilst the lyrics, like the music, are very dark, depressing, and sorrowful, there is that search for truth and a glimmer of hope that Arkley so wonderfully weaves into his writing. The vocals generally stick to death growls and grunts; in this way it's a shame there's no longer the female counterpart for balance. But really this is a solid release for its genre and if you went for Ashen Mortality's stuff or enjoy the music of bands like My Dying Bride or Candlemass you really should lap up My Silent Wake.
